The new year brings a new fire safety law for the province.
Starting January 1, all vulnerable occupancies - which include group homes where residents need care for physical disabilities, long-term care homes, and homes for seniors who require assistance with daily living- must have automatic sprinklers installed.
The law was first introduced in 2014, making Ontario the first province to require automatic sprinklers in all care facilities.
This provided facilities 5 years to install the systems, with the deadline date set for January 1, 2019.
The province provided $20 million in funding for care homes to hire trained staff and to make sure electrical systems were up to code standards.
