Human trafficking arrest made after rescue of young woman in Ottawa

Miguel Ortiz is facing nine criminal charges, including aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, and human trafficking and recruiting.

The Ottawa Police Service has charged a 28-year-old man with various human trafficking charges, stemming from a recent investigation which lead to the rescue of a young woman.

The survivor, a woman in her early 20's, came to the OPS' Human Trafficking Unit in last month. 

The unit investigated the case, and on October 9, the suspect was found and arrested in Ottawa.

Miguel Ortiz was charged with the following: 

- Trafficking in persons by recruiting (2 counts)
- Financial/material benefit/trafficking person over 18
- Point a firearm
- Possess weapon, etc./for committing an offence 
- Assault with weapon or imitation weapon
- Aggravated assault 
- Harassment by threatening conduct to other person 
- Uttering threats/death or bodily harm 

He attended show cause Wednesday and he was remanded into custody.

Members of the Human Trafficking Unit were able to help the survivor in this case and bring her to a safe place.

Investigators strongly believe that there could be additional victims in this case.  

Miguel Ortiz is also known as 'Angel' and 'Diablo.'
